Funke Akindele Steps Back from Lead Role in New Movie

Behind the Scenes

Nollywood heavyweight Funke Akindele has revealed a surprising twist about her December release: she will not be playing the lead in her own upcoming film, Behind the Scenes.

Speaking in an interview with Zikoko, Akindele said her decision reflects a deeper mission than starring, it’s about lifting up emerging talent. “In life, you’re not going to be the star forever. Pray you’re evergreen,” she explained.

What Behind the Scenes Is About

The movie, produced under her Funke Akindele Network (FAAN), promises a raw and honest look at what happens “behind the smile.” According to Akindele, the film explores the hidden pain, pressure, and perseverance beneath everyday glamour.

Akindele also shared that the idea was born from a moment she felt was deeply “relatable,” inspiring her to tell the story.

A Path Guided by Faith

Interestingly, Behind the Scenes wasn’t her original plan. She revealed that she initially wanted to make A Tribe Called Judah 2 but felt spiritually redirected.  She said that despite drafting multiple scripts and negotiating other projects, she kept receiving what she described as divine guidance to pursue this film instead.

Release & What to Expect

Behind the Scenes is scheduled for release on December 12, 2025, continuing Akindele’s tradition of December movie premieres.  The film is already generating buzz, not just for its themes, but for what it signals: a new chapter in Akindele’s career, centered on mentorship, legacy, and meaningful storytelling.

Funke Akindele’s decision to remain behind the camera rather than leading on-screen signals a new creative phase, one driven by vision, collaboration, and the desire to elevate Nollywood’s cinematic storytelling.

If anything, this choice raises anticipation even higher: when a filmmaker of her calibre steps back from acting, it often means the story is too powerful to divide attention.

Whatever Funke Akindele is building with her latest BTS film, it’s clear she is stepping deeper into the role of a visionary filmmaker, one focused on shaping stories, amplifying new talent, and redefining Nollywood’s future.
