Nigerian Artist Makes History with First-Ever Joint Portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama

What happens when one of Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists meets one of the world’s most iconic couples?

History gets painted.

Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby has achieved a remarkable milestone after being commissioned to create the first official joint portrait of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Titled “The Obamas: Springing Forth,” the monumental artwork was commissioned by the Obama Foundation and unveiled ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

The portrait will be permanently displayed in the Center’s Hope and Change Lobby, where visitors can experience the piece up close.

Standing over nine feet tall, the mixed-media masterpiece is far more than a traditional portrait. Akunyili Crosby layered acrylic paint, charcoal, colored pencils, and photo-transfer techniques to weave together hundreds of personal and historical references from the Obamas’ lives.

From family photographs and cultural symbols to subtle nods to their journey to the White House, every section of the artwork tells a story within a story.

The reaction from the Obamas themselves was emotional.

Upon seeing the portrait for the first time, Michelle Obama described it as a work that captured “all of the stories within the story,” while praising the artist for infusing the piece with life and joy.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, jokingly wondered why the portrait didn’t make him look younger.

For many Nigerians, however, this moment represents something even bigger.

Akunyili Crosby is the daughter of the late Dora Akunyili, one of Nigeria’s most respected public figures.

Over the years, she has built a global reputation for creating deeply layered works that explore identity, migration, memory, and the experience of living between cultures.

Her work has earned international acclaim, including a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as the “Genius Grant.”

What makes this commission particularly significant is that it places a Nigerian artist at the center of one of the most important presidential cultural projects in recent American history. In a world where African creatives are increasingly shaping global conversations in film, music, gaming, comics, and visual art, Akunyili Crosby’s achievement serves as another reminder that African talent continues to influence culture far beyond the continent.

And perhaps that’s the real story here.

This isn’t just a portrait of the Obamas.

It’s also a portrait of how far African creativity has traveled and how much further it can go.
