And yet, from the moment Niyi Akin appeared in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, audiences couldn’t stop asking the same question: who is that?

That reaction was not isolated. It was everywhere. And it sent a quiet, London-trained British-Nigerian actor viral overnight on what he’s described as the fulfilment of a childhood dream.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and released July 31, 2026 as part of Phase Six of the MCU Niyi Akin plays David, an ordinary man who gets caught in the middle of something very extraordinary.
During a tense cat-and-mouse chase between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey, David gets psychically hijacked his body taken over by Jean Grey so she can use him to taunt Peter Parker directly.
In other words: poor David essentially becomes a human trolling device. And somehow, Niyi Akin turned that into the most talked-about performance in the entire film.
The scene requires him to play two things at once, David’s confusion and vulnerability, and Jean Grey’s cold, calculating confidence inhabiting his body.
That duality, pulled off in under three minutes, is what audiences locked onto. It’s the kind of scene that looks simple on paper and is anything but in execution.

Who Is Niyi Akin?
Niyi Akin didn’t stumble into Spider-Man. He built toward it deliberately, with years of serious craft behind him.
He trained at two of the UK’s most respected performing arts institutions: The BRIT School in Croydon the same school that produced Adele, Amy Winehouse, and a generation of British creative talent and LAMDA (the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art), one of the world’s leading drama conservatoires.
That training background is not incidental. It’s the foundation that made a three-minute scene look effortless.
His screen credits before Brand New Day were already building a case:
- Boarders — the BAFTA-nominated BBC comedy-drama about Black British students navigating an elite boarding school, which became one of the most celebrated British TV debut series in recent years

And here’s the detail that makes his story genuinely compelling beyond the acting credits: Niyi Akin co-founded a production company called Ignorance Prevails with actor-filmmaker Blair Gyabaah.
Through it, he produced and directed his debut project EVOL. He is not waiting for the industry to give him a seat. He is building his own table while he waits for the Marvel-sized doors to open.

The MCU filmed Brand New Day from August to December 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England and on location in Glasgow and throughout England which means Akin trained on wire rigs, rehearsed the psychic possession sequence, and did it all in the same country where he’d spent years building his craft.
