The wait is officially over. Today, October 20, the 10th anniversary edition of the Lagos International Festival of Animation opens its doors in Lagos, bringing together animators, studio directors, voice actors, and digital storytellers from across the globe. Running through Thursday, October 22, this milestone edition marks a decade of growing Africa’s animation ecosystem and connecting local talent with the global creative industry.
Over the past ten years, LIFANIMA has grown from a modest gathering of local illustrators into one of the continent’s most influential animation platforms. This milestone year feels especially significant given the sheer volume of global interest, with the festival recording over 1,298 short film entries from more than 120 countries.
The massive influx of international submissions reflects how much the festival’s footprint has expanded. It aligns naturally with the momentum built during LIFANIMA 2025 where everybody is getting animated, establishing Lagos as a crucial hub for original animated content.

Record Prizes and National Recognition
One of the most talked-about highlights of this 10th anniversary edition is the eye-watering prize pool up for grabs. A total of ₦22.5 million in cash prizes will be awarded to top creators, representing one of the largest financial commitments to African animation to date.
A major portion of this financial backing comes directly through the National Orientation Agency Animation Award. The winner takes home ₦10 million, while second and third place creators receive ₦7.5 million and ₦5 million respectively.
This high-value national award builds directly on the momentum generated during last year’s gathering, when the NOA announced the ₦22.5 million national animation award at LIFANIMA 2025 to encourage stories that highlight authentic African values, culture, and national identity.
Three Days of Screenings, Panels, and Industry Networking
Across the three days, attendees can expect a packed schedule featuring short film screenings, panel discussions, portfolio reviews, and technical masterclasses.
The opening day focuses heavily on creative economy dialogues and studio sustainability. Industry veterans and policymakers are gathering to discuss distribution pipelines, intellectual property protection, and investment frameworks for African studios. This policy-driven approach mirrors the strategic discussions kicked off during LIFANIMA 2025 day 1 where creative economy dialogues set the tone for Africa’s animation future.

Beyond executive discussions, the festival floor offers young animators a direct channel to pitch projects to local and international distributors, receive feedback on character designs, and explore collaborative opportunities with foreign studios.
Celebrating the Best of African Storytelling
The festival will culminate in a grand awards ceremony celebrating exceptional craft across 2D animation, 3D character design, stop-motion, visual effects, and student short films.
Recognizing excellence has always been at the heart of the festival’s mission. The excitement surrounding this year’s competitive categories carries on the tradition seen during the LIFANIMA 2025 awards night celebrating the best of African animation.
As creators gather in Lagos today to celebrate a decade of growth, LIFANIMA continues to prove that African animation is no longer just an emerging market, but a thriving, commercially viable creative industry.
