For years, African filmmakers arriving in London have faced the same quiet frustration their work has no permanent home here.
Festivals. One-off screenings. Diaspora community events. All valuable, but none of them the same as walking up to a cinema, buying a ticket, and watching an African film any week you choose.
That infrastructure has simply not existed in the United Kingdom. Until now.
On August 10, 2026, Mo Abudu, founder and CEO of EbonyLife Group, Oscar Academy member, and one of Africa’s most powerful media executives announced that EbonyLife Place London will officially open in October 2026 as the first cinema in the United Kingdom dedicated exclusively to African and Black films.
It is located at 208 Wandsworth Road, London, SW8 2JU minutes from the West End, near the iconic new American Embassy, with views across the London skyline. And it is not simply a screening room. It is a full cultural destination.
What EbonyLife Place London Actually Is
The announcement came with a video documenting the transformation of the Wandsworth Road property showing it in its original state when EbonyLife acquired it in March 2025, and revealing what it has become more than a year later.
The auditorium now carries a polished, vintage-inspired cinema aesthetic the kind of space that says this is serious, permanent, and built to last.
“EbonyLife Place London will become the first cinema in the United Kingdom dedicated exclusively to African and Black films, while also creating a vibrant cultural hub celebrating our fashion, music, food and art.”
The full venue includes:
- A 180-seat auditorium — purpose-built for African and Black film screenings

- Fèhintì Lounge — a space for community and conversation
- Maji Concession & Bar — drinks and bar experience
- Zuri Retail — African fashion and creative merchandise
- The Living Wall Gallery — rotating art exhibitions celebrating African visual culture
- Grand Reception — the entry point for the full EbonyLife Place experience
This is not a pop-up. This is not a festival tent. The UK government has already recognised the project describing EbonyLife Place London as part of efforts to strengthen investment and creative ties between Nigeria and the UK, and noting that the venue is expected to create up to 40 jobs.
It has received backing as part of the UK-African Investment Summit framework, where Mo Abudu was appointed Creatives Champion by the UK Government in 2024.
To understand why EbonyLife Place London is significant, you need to understand how long Mo Abudu has been building toward this moment.
She founded EbonyLife Group in 2013, starting with EbonyLife TV Africa’s first globally distributed, 24/7 entertainment and lifestyle network.
From there she expanded into EbonyLife Films, producing some of Nigeria’s biggest international cinema successes including Chief Daddy, The Wedding Party franchise, and Blood Sisters on Netflix.
She built EbonyLife Studios in Lagos, a world-class production facility. She launched EbonyLife Creative Academy to train the next generation of African storytellers.
And she created EbonyLife Place Lagos as a lifestyle and entertainment destination that proved the model could work at scale.
The London expansion is the international chapter of a story that has always been building toward a global stage.
Mo Abudu is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the body that votes for the Oscars. She sits on the Board of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
And she is currently raising a $50 million Afro Film Fund in collaboration with development finance institutions specifically to support African filmmakers who need capital to produce and distribute their work globally.
EbonyLife Place London is not a vanity project. It is infrastructure the permanent exhibition home that African cinema has been missing in one of the world’s most important cultural capitals.
The African diaspora in the United Kingdom numbers over 2 million people and has been consuming African film, music, and culture for decades through informal networks, community screenings, and streaming platforms.
What has never existed is a dedicated, permanent, well-resourced physical venue where that culture is centred, celebrated, and commercially sustained year-round.
As Obaland Magazine noted in their analysis festivals and one-off screenings have brought African films to UK audiences, but a permanent home changes the equation entirely.
It gives filmmakers a place to plan releases. It gives distributors a consistent exhibition partner. It gives audiences a reason to expect African and Black stories year-round not just when a festival happens to be on.
For Nollywood specifically, the venue represents a potential distribution breakthrough. Nigerian films currently reach UK audiences primarily through streaming or occasional theatre hires.
A dedicated cinema with ongoing programming means Nollywood titles can have proper theatrical runs in London the kind of release that builds cultural legitimacy and long-term revenue.
