AMVCA 2026 Voting Closes, Countdown Begins to May 9 Awards Night

Voting for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) has officially closed, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated nights on Africa’s entertainment calendar. The curtain will rise on May 9, 2026, when winners across film, television, and digital series will be unveiled at a star-studded ceremony in Lagos, capping weeks of public participation and industry buzz.

Organisers of the AMVCA took to their platforms to thank audiences for engaging deeply with the voting process. “Voting for #AMVCA12 is officially closed,” they said in a statement. “Thank you for showing up, showing love, and backing your favourites all the way.” With that phase concluded, attention now shifts fully to the awards night itself.

A Celebration of African Storytelling

The AMVCA has grown into a cultural staple since its inception, recognised for celebrating excellence in African film and television while acknowledging the diverse range of storytelling emerging from the continent. This year’s edition features a blend of jury-decided awards, which are determined by industry professionals, and audience-voted categories, putting creative power directly into the hands of fans

Among the films generating the most excitement are Gingerrr and The Herd, each leading this year’s nominations with nine nods apiece, alongside strong recognition for titles such as My Father’s Shadow, To Kill A Monkey, 3 Cold Dishes and The Serpent’s Gift. These movies reflect a vibrant Nollywood and African cinema scene increasingly recognised for both artistic ambition and cultural depth.

The AMVCA’s 32 categories span a broad cross-section of filmmaking disciplines, from Best Overall Movie and Best Director to craft fields like Best Writing in a Movie and Best Documentary. The inclusion of new awards amplifies representation, with categories celebrating achievements in indigenous languages from across North and Central Africa, underscoring the awards’ commitment to cultural diversity.

Sponsors, Hosts and the Final Countdown

This year’s ceremony also features notable developments beyond the nominees themselves. Premium spirits brand Don Julio has joined as the headline sponsor of AMVCA 2026, adding a luxury flair to the event as stakeholders and creatives prepare to gather in Lagos.

In addition, the hosting lineup for May 9 introduces fresh energy to the show stage. Comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha have been announced as co-hosts of the night, stepping into the spotlight together in what organisers describe as “a blend of wit, narrative, and global screen advocacy.” This marks a notable shift from previous years, promising a ceremony that’s both entertaining and reflective of the industry’s continental appeal.

Fans, Industry and Predictive Buzz

With voting wrapped, entertainment commentators and fans alike are turning to predictions ahead of the awards night. Some outlets, such as What Kept Me Up (WKMUp), have offered editorial forecasts on potential winners, comparing audience sentiment with industry expectations. These predictions give viewers plenty to debate as the countdown continues.

For many in the Nigerian film industry and across Africa, the AMVCA represents more than trophies, it’s a platform that spotlights African creatives, sparks global conversation, and reinforces the value of indigenous storytelling in an increasingly interconnected entertainment landscape.

What to Expect on May 9

The awards night scheduled for May 9, 2026, will be broadcast across MultiChoice platforms and promises red-carpet moments, industry speeches, and celebrations of cinema and television achievements. Audiences are eager to see whether heavy favourites like Gingerrr and The Herd will live up to their nominations, or whether surprises await when winners are announced.

As organisers prepare for the live show, the climax of the season, the AMVCA, continues to stand as one of Africa’s most prestigious entertainment events, celebrating talent, creativity, and the stories that resonate across the continent and beyond.
