SPOOF Animation’s Uniquely Me Wins Best 3D Animation at LIFANIMA 2026

What does it mean to stand out when the world keeps telling you to fit in? That question sits at the heart of Uniquely Me, the animated short from Nigerian studio SPOOF Animation that has won Best 3D Animation at the 2026 Lagos International Festival of Animation (LIFANIMA).

The award is a significant moment for the studio, but it also brings fresh attention to a story built around something many people struggle with, learning to embrace what makes them different.

Rather than treating individuality as a weakness to overcome, Uniquely Me explores the challenge of being yourself in a world where following trends and meeting expectations can feel easier than standing apart. It is a theme that reaches beyond animation, speaking to anyone who has ever felt pressure to change themselves to fit in.

And now, with its LIFANIMA win, the film has another reason to find a wider audience.

When SPOOF Animation announced Uniquely Me in 2023, founder Ayodele Elegba described it as an adventure of authenticity and empowerment. The story was conceived around the tension between embracing one’s individuality and conforming to what everyone else considers acceptable. Elegba also explained that it was an idea he believed would be better told through 3D animation.

That creative choice matters because animation can make internal struggles visible. Through character, movement, expression and an imagined world, it can explore emotions and experiences that audiences recognise in their own lives.

For a story centred on identity, that opens up an opportunity to connect with viewers across different ages and backgrounds. The question is not simply whether someone looks or behaves differently, but whether they have the confidence to own that difference.

It is a message worth revisiting, especially in a culture shaped by trends, social expectations and the constant pressure to measure ourselves against other people.

SPOOF Animation’s Growing Creative Journey

The win also adds another milestone to SPOOF Animation’s journey in the African animation industry.

Founded by Elegba in 2016, the Nigerian studio works across 2D and 3D animation, visual development, storyboarding and other forms of visual storytelling. Its previous projects include Ajaka: Lost in Rome, which won Best 2D Animation at LIFANIMA in 2023.

In an interview with Comicpanel World earlier this year, Elegba reflected on the studio’s evolution, explaining how finding its creative identity helped clarify the kind of work it wanted to make. He also highlighted the studio’s interest in action-driven animation and its commitment to developing work with international appeal.

Uniquely Me represents another side of that creative journey, a 3D short built around a relatable human theme. Its recognition at LIFANIMA places the project among the works receiving attention at a festival dedicated to showcasing animation and supporting the wider African animation ecosystem.

Awards are not the only measure of an animated film’s value, but recognition at a festival such as LIFANIMA can help bring a project to new audiences and create more opportunities for the people behind it.

For Nigerian animation, every recognised production adds to a growing body of work demonstrating the range of stories local studios can tell, the techniques they can explore and the audiences they can reach.

For SPOOF Animation, the Best 3D Animation award is another achievement in a journey that has included both original storytelling and industry recognition. More importantly, it gives Uniquely Me a fresh opportunity to connect with viewers who may see parts of their own experiences reflected in its central theme.

You do not have to be an animator to connect with a story about identity. Sometimes, the most meaningful question a film can ask is whether we are comfortable being ourselves when the world expects something else.
