Hurst, who previously voiced Thor in the God of War Ragnarök video game, had spent months putting on muscle and preparing for heavy action scenes.
However, tragedy struck in late June during a stunt scene. Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear that required immediate surgery. With a long recovery and rehabilitation timeline stretching well into next year, holding up production to wait for him would have pushed the show’s premiere all the way back to 2027.
Faced with a massive production delay, studio executives made the hard choice to recast the lead role. Rather than running a long public audition, Amazon went straight to Dave Bautista. While rumors circulated earlier this month that Bautista was in talks, both Deadline and Variety have now confirmed that the contract is officially signed.
Swapping out a lead actor mid-way through a project is always tricky, but Amazon is taking an unusually bold approach. Reports indicate that none of the footage filmed over the first four months of production will be used in the final cut.
That means four entire episodes, directed by Emmy winner Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout), are being thrown out. Toye remains on board as director and will shoot those opening episodes again from scratch with Bautista in the lead.
While throwing away months of hard work is a huge decision, it gives the creative team a fresh start. Earlier this year, Amazon released a first-look promotional image featuring Hurst as Kratos alongside young actor Callum Vinson as Atreus.
