WEBTOON & Genies Bring AI Avatars and Legend of Korra to Life, A New Era of Interactive Storytelling

The world of digital comics is taking a bold step into the future as WEBTOON Entertainment, the global webcomic and animation storytelling platform, has announced a landmark partnership with AI avatar technology company Genies, designed to transform how fans engage with their favourite characters and stories. The collaboration marks a new chapter in interactive fan experiences, expanding comic consumption beyond reading into dynamic digital interaction.

Under this strategic agreement, WEBTOON and Genies will develop AI-powered digital avatars, collectible digital assets, and interactive character chat features that allow fans to actively engage with characters from popular webtoon series as avatars that exist both within and alongside comic story worlds. This summer, select titles will debut avatar experiences that enable fans to not only read but interact with stories in entirely new ways

The Future of Fan Engagement: Beyond Static Pages

Traditionally, comics and webtoons have been a passive reading experience, fans enjoy characters and storylines on a screen or paper. But with the WEBTOON x Genies initiative, that model is expanding.

Participating creators will have the option to extend their comic characters into interactive 3D avatars powered by Genies’ AI technology, enabling personalized experiences that blend storytelling, immersive interaction, and optional digital collectibles. These avatars are designed to reflect the personality, artistic style, and lore of the characters they represent, offering fans more than static images or text, they offer digital companions connected directly to the story world.

Fans will be able to chat with avatars, unlock expanded story lore, and collect exclusive digital items as they interact with the character experiences. According to the official press release, creators have full control over participation, and only opt-in series will be featured, ensuring that character integrity and artistic vision remain central to the experience.

This creator-first approach is built into the framework: WEBTOON and Genies emphasise that nothing moves forward without explicit creator sign-off on avatar designs, narrative extensions, and interactive features. This means fans can interact with their favourites while creators retain ownership and creative oversight

What This Means for WEBTOON and Fans

The partnership arrives at a time when digital entertainment platforms are seeking deeper ways to engage audiences, and WEBTOON’s 160+ million monthly users make it fertile ground for innovation. By marrying AI avatars with serialized storytelling, WEBTOON is positioning itself at the intersection of comics, digital identity, and interactive media

What’s clear is that this push goes beyond novelty. With avatars that know their story’s lore, fans can ask questions about characters, explore personality backstories, and unlock new narrative threads in ways that were previously impossible in static comic formats. This could fundamentally reshape how audiences think about participation in story worlds.

The partnership also lays groundwork for new monetization streams for creators, as digital collectibles and optional paid expansions could become part of how creators earn from their work, a significant evolution in creator revenue models that historically relied primarily on readership and licensing deals.

Legend of Korra Joins WEBTOON’s Expanding Universe

In parallel to the avatar initiative, WEBTOON has added The Legend of Korra comic series to its platform, a milestone that underscores the platform’s growing influence in the animation and storytelling world. Originally adapted from the acclaimed Nickelodeon animated series, The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars kicks off in vertical scroll format on WEBTOON, allowing long-time fans and new readers alike to experience Korra’s journey in a format optimised for mobile and digital consumption.

This launch is particularly timely as the Avatar franchise continues to expand its footprint, with new animated and live-action adaptations gaining traction around the world. The comic adaptation on WEBTOON offers readers a rich extension of the Avatar universe as it heads into its 15th anniversary celebrations.

Navigating AI in Creative Spaces

While digital avatars and AI-driven interactivity are exciting, the industry is watching closely how these tools are implemented. WEBTOON’s approach, which emphasises creator involvement and opt-in participation, reflects a growing sensitivity to concerns around AI use in creative media, particularly when it comes to protecting original artwork, narrative integrity, and creator ownership.

By ensuring that avatar features are opt-in and thoroughly vetted by creators, WEBTOON is underscoring that AI should support, not replace, artistic direction and storytelling. This contrasts with broader controversies in digital media where AI tools have sometimes been deployed without adequate safeguards or artist consent.

What Comes Next

The first wave of avatar experiences on WEBTOON is expected to roll out this summer, beginning with a curated set of creator-approved titles. Fans can expect to see interactive features emerge gradually, including character chats, in-app collectibles, and narrative expansions tied directly to reading progression.

As more creators elect to participate, the immersive character experiences could become one of WEBTOON’s standout features, redefining fan engagement and setting new precedents for how story worlds are experienced.

For animation fans, webtoon enthusiasts, and creators alike, this development is a sign that digital storytelling is entering a new era, one where stories are not just read, but lived.
