Building an Action Empire: Idris Elba, Nile Group, and Action Xtreme Join Forces for Landmark West African Film Slate

In a monumental development for African cinema, global Hollywood star Idris Elba has partnered with Moses Babatope’s Nile Media Entertainment Group and Chee Keong Cheung’s Action Xtreme to launch a dedicated West African action film slate. The landmark collaboration, first reported by Deadline and highlighted by Nollywire, brings together Elba’s production banner 22Summers, Nile Motion Pictures, and UK-based Action Xtreme to develop, finance, and produce a multi-picture roster of high-octane, commercially driven action features.

Rooted in authentic African stories and cultural perspectives, the ambitious deal aims to establish a long-term, self-sustaining production and talent pipeline across the region. The coalition’s first feature project is set to be officially announced in the coming months, with a theatrical release window targeted for Q4 2026, followed quickly by a second high-concept title planned for Q1 2027. Under the creative structure, Elba will serve as executive producer alongside Gina Carter and is attached to direct one of the future slate titles. Meanwhile, Chee Keong Cheung, director of Son of the Soil, will take the director’s chair for the debut project. On the business front, Moses Babatope will produce under Nile Motion Pictures, with African theatrical distribution managed natively by Nile Entertainment.

Beyond the immediate star power of the announcement, the multi-studio alliance represents a calculated, highly strategic push into genre-focused filmmaking within West Africa. While Nollywood has experienced unprecedented commercial growth, crossing record-breaking theatrical box office figures driven primarily by romantic comedies, family dramas, and slapstick humor, high-concept action cinema has historically remained underrepresented due to high budget requirements and complex technical demands.

Action has long been recognized by film historians and global distributors as one of the most commercially exportable genres in cinema, effortlessly transcending language and cultural barriers. By marrying international technical expertise with Nile’s deeply integrated distribution power across West Africa, this partnership seeks to build a sustainable blueprint for high-budget African action cinema that can compete directly on the global stage.

For Moses Babatope’s Nile Media Entertainment Group, the new action slate adds a critical, genre-driven production layer to an already rapidly expanding media ecosystem. Over the past year, Nile has aggressively established itself across the entire film value chain, controlling infrastructure across production, distribution, and exhibition.

The company recently bolstered its international market standing after being appointed as the official West African theatrical distributor for Hollywood heavyweights Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures through a strategic partnership with United International Pictures (UIP). Combining major studio distribution rights with expanding cinema exhibition networks puts Nile in an unprecedented position to control how local and international content is released, monetized, and scaled across the continent.

“This is not simply about making films,” emphasized Nile CEO Moses Babatope. “It is about creating a sustainable ecosystem that combines production, talent development, and distribution to give African filmmakers the opportunity to create world-class action content that can travel across borders while remaining authentically African.”

For Idris Elba, whose passion for building African creative infrastructure has seen him advocate for studios and film hubs across the continent, the venture is part of a broader, data-driven mission to prove the commercial viability of African cinema to global financiers.

“The journey continues,” stated Elba during the partnership launch. “Strengthening the African film industry is about collaboration and shared perspectives. I am fortunate to have these partners and aim to have global success with this slate. Success breeds data, and data breeds investment.”

The deal also marks a natural evolution for UK-based Action Xtreme, building upon its existing first-look co-production agreement with Nile Entertainment following the acquisition of Son of the Soil. By combining local talent with international action choreography, stunt execution, and distribution pipelines, the tripartite partnership is poised to usher in a bold new era for African genre filmmaking.
