Uzoma Dunkwu — animation director, character designer, founder of Scroll Entertainment, and proudly self-taught digital artist from Lagos, Nigeria has just become an Emmy Award winner for his character design work on Eyes of Wakanda, the Marvel Animation series on Disney+.
The win was announced on August 11, 2026, as part of the 78th Emmy Awards Juried Winners announcement and it is, without question, one of the most significant individual achievements in Nigerian animation history.
This isn’t a participation award. The Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation is a juried category which means there are no nominees.
A panel of professional peers from the animation industry screens every entry, deliberates on the merits of each, and has the power to award one, several, or zero Emmys. Getting selected is harder than it sounds, because the panel owes no one a win.
This year, five artists won across the animation category out of hundreds of entries. Uzoma Dunkwu was selected for his character design on the episode “Into the Lion’s Den” of Eyes of Wakanda.
He was honoured alongside artists from Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal (Adult Swim), The Mighty Nein (Prime Video), and Star Wars: Visions (Disney+) some of the most critically respected animation productions in the world right now.
His Emmy will be presented during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 5–6 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
Who Is Uzoma Dunkwu?
Uzoma Dunkwu is entirely self-taught. No animation school. No overseas conservatoire. A self-described “Artrepreneur” based in Lagos who built his skills through discipline, online learning, and consistent practice and then took those skills to some of the most prestigious animation studios in the world.
He studied at the University of Benin not for animation, but that didn’t stop him. Over more than a decade, he built a client list that includes Netflix Animation, Marvel Studios Animation, NPR, Psyop, Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, 8mm Entertainment and more.
In 2015, he founded Scroll Entertainment, a digital content development and production studio in Lagos, servicing local and international clients.
He curated Nigeria’s biggest art competition the Sketchathon, which drew over 4 million Nigerians online. He was a panellist at Social Media Week Nigeria and the Nigeria International Film Summit.
He produced an animated short film contending for an Academy Award nomination. And in early 2021, he joined the Walt Disney Television Animation development team on a part-time basis a connection that eventually led directly to his Emmy-winning work.
In a pinned post from August 2025, Uzoma shared that he was first hired as an early concept artist for Eyes of Wakanda in August 2021 four years before the Emmy came.
He worked on ideation for the first set of characters under the vision of Director Todd Harris.
That early contribution shaped the visual identity of the entire series and a professional jury of his peers in the animation industry just confirmed that the work was worthy of television’s highest individual honour.
He also worked on Iyanu: The Age of Wonders the animated series based on the beloved African comic that brought Yoruba mythology to an international streaming audience.

That is not a generic acceptance speech. That is a man who has spent over a decade building, training, founding studios, curating competitions, and fighting for the visibility of Nigerian creative talent and who, in the moment of his biggest individual recognition, immediately turned it outward.
The win belongs to him. He is also choosing to share what it means.
Uzoma Dunkwu’s Emmy win lands in the middle of a remarkable run for Nigerian animation on the global stage.
The Travails of Ajadi, a Nigerian animated short won Best Stop Motion at LIFANIMA 2025 and went on to earn an official competition selection at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival the world’s premier animation event.
Spoof Animation’s Next Kick was officially selected for LIFANIMA 2026. Iyanu: The Age of Wonders brought Yoruba mythology to an international streaming audience.
And now Uzoma Dunkwu Lagos-based, self-taught, founder of his own Nigerian studio holds an Emmy.
As Pride Magazine Nigeria wrote in a June 2026 profile: “His designs are rich in detail, personality and cultural authenticity, proving that African stories can command the same global appeal as any other narrative.”
That’s no longer an argument to be made. It’s a fact with an Emmy attached to it.
